On top of having whiskers and a hard shell, it can fly. The "cockamouse" deserves a mention on this list, as it is an odd and likely forgotten plot point that happens in the first season. Ted and Robin stay in the city for Thanksgiving , because Robin is Canadian and Ted works on Friday. Marshall and Lily, having no such issues, visit his family in Minnesota. With Friendsgiving off the table, Ted and Robin go to a soup kitchen to volunteer and they — wait for it — see a gleeful Barney volunteering.

They're further shocked to discover the volunteers love Barney's hard-working spirit, and that he even has an Employee of the Year plaque on the wall.

As it turns out, Barney is volunteering out of court-mandated community service for public urination. When Robin and Ted get Barney kicked out, Barney makes them go to the strip club with him. Happy Thanksgiving? While this is happening, Lily is having the worst Thanksgiving ever in Minnesota, with Marshall's loud, tall, and intimidating family. Ironically, Lily is also arrested for public urination, because the neighborhood convenience store doesn't have a bathroom and she doesn't want Marshall to know she bought a pregnancy test.

After hearing the story of pound Marshall's birth, the idea of bearing an Eriksen child is not an altogether pleasant one for Lily.

Nights when the group is separated tend to be the most momentous ones of all — but not always in the way you'd expect. Case in point: Lily and Marshall spend virtually an entire episode in the bathroom.

Because making plans and following through can feel overwhelming, Lily and Marshall bail on complex out-of-town anniversary plans and opt to stay home. As they're feeling introspective about their relationship and its future, this is a solid idea — too bad it's thrown into chaos when Ted and his then-girlfriend Victoria come to the apartment for a little alone time.

This forces Lily and Marshall into the bathroom until Ted and Victoria move to the bedroom. Much embarrassing pillow talk is overheard and gagged at. Thus, for an entire episode and during their anniversary, Marshall and Lily celebrate in their bathroom. Now that's romance, baby.

Believe it or not, Barney wasn't always as, in his words, awesome as he is today. This is revealed during a game night, when Lily shows a mystery tape to the gang. Barney is shown in a ponytail and tie-dye, playing a song for a girl named Shannon while uncontrollably sobbing. This incident helps to show why Barney acts the way he does today and gets in a few laughs about this get-up. Further details about Barney's past are revealed once the gang settles into their seats at MacLaren's.

Barney was working at a coffee shop during his hippie days. He and his then-girlfriend Shannon were getting ready to join the Peace Corps, when Shannon stood him up because her dad wouldn't let her go on the trip.

As it turns out, Shannon was actually cheating on Barney with a smug, suit-wearing dude seen earlier in the episode. As a result of Shannon leaving him for this man, Barney's whole life became about money in the bank, suits in the closet, and a string of one-night stands. People aren't typically born sleazy, of course, and just like all characters, Barney has his origin story.

Ted Mosby does arguably the stupidest thing he's ever done in season one, when he cheats on Victoria and lies to Robin. As any fan knows, there's a lot of competition for that title. After finding out Robin still has feelings for him due to an inadvertent comment from Lily , Ted goes to Robin's apartment. He's keyed up from this revelation, and from tension in his relationship with Victoria.

All of this results in him lying to Robin that he and Victoria have broken up. They kiss, Ted takes a breather in the bathroom, and emerges, convinced he's about to hook up with Robin — only to find Robin with his phone, finishing a conversation with Victoria. She tells him to get out. This ends Ted and Victoria's relationship, and imparts one of the series' most important lessons: Nothing good happens after 2 AM.

With one careless and lustful swing of the bat, Ted hurts two people he cares about. Marshall and Lily scramble to plan their wedding when their dream venue offers a date two months earlier than they'd accounted for. In search of a band, Marshall suggests a group, but Lily wants to listen to their work before committing.

Because nothing is normal on TV shows, the only way for Lily to see the band play is by sneaking into the high school prom they're set to perform at. Lily, Robin, and Barney dress for the occasion and attempt to blend in. The trio is denied entrance because, quite obviously, they're adults.

Robin and Lily ask two students to prom and thus secure their ticket in. Lily talks to the band, and they agree to play Marshall and Lily's song, "Good Feeling" by Violent Femmes, if Lily can provide the sheet music. Ted and Marshall bring said sheet music to the prom, the band plays it, and Marshall and Lily decide to hire them. Lily starts to have doubts about marriage, however, as she hasn't done much of what she dreamed she'd do while in college. Though Robin is able to soothe Lily's anxieties, this ends up being a major problem for her throughout the series.

Season one ends with a split: Lilypad and Marshmallow break up after Marshall hears her accept an art fellowship in San Francisco. This might not seem like a big deal, but Lily applied to a fellowship in a different state without telling Marshall, despite the fact of their looming wedding. The easiest solution would have been postponing the wedding, but it appears both Marshall and Lily have their doubts about tying the knot.

Meanwhile, Ted professes his love to Robin again with a blue orchestra and enough red roses to populate a garden. Robin initially says no, but Ted doesn't stop trying. Knowing that she's about to head off on a company camping trip and that one of her colleagues who is interested in dating her will be there, Ted attempts a rain dance which works.

Robin and Ted reconcile, and once again become a couple. In the end, it's revealed that he was working for GNB all along as a 'please' - an acronym for 'Provide Legal Exculpation and Sign Everything'. He was hired so that GNB could blame him for all their nefarious deeds , but he actually took their money and a lot of it , and then turned them over to the feds in exchange for immunity for the things he signed for.

He'd be pretty happy that this plan paid off! One of the saddest things about Barney, though, is that while everyone else has a passion and a purpose in their work, he really doesn't. He earns more than everyone else combined, most likely , but he never really seems to reach a point where he is working at something that really fulfills him and brings him joy.

Perhaps season one Barney wouldn't really care about this and would definitely act like he didn't , but he may be a little sad about it on the inside. Admittedly, Marshall would be the one who would really be Ted's best friend, but through all their ups and downs and that includes some big ones , Ted and Barney are as close as ever at the end. And while season one Barney wouldn't admit it, their friendship means everything to him - he definitely puts his bros as a higher priority than the women in his life.

Knowing that this bro-lationship stood the test of time would definitely be a reason to be proud. Barney makes it repeatedly clear in the early seasons that he thinks that marriage is a terrible idea.

He loves to talk about how people who wed are making a terrible mistake, ruining their lives, and wasting themselves on monogamy and commitment. So the fact that Barney himself ends up married would come as a total shock to his younger self.

He would absolutely hate the idea that he eventually marries anyway, instead of continuing to sleep around until he is on his deathbed, as he originally planned.

Season one Barney may hate the idea of being married to Robin, but he would undoubtedly be pretty proud of sleeping with her - and would definitely come up with a particularly crude way to phrase his feelings on the matter. After all, season one Barney is all about sleeping with as many attractive women as possible, and Robin is absolutely stunning.

If Barney found out some other things about Robin - her love of cigars and Scotch, her willingness to suit up, her ability to play laser tag - he may even accept that they were in a full-blown relationship. In the same way that season one Barney would be appalled that he got married, he would hate that he has a child. Throughout the show, Barney makes jokes about being terrified that one of the women he sleeps with might get pregnant.

When Lily announces her own pregnancy, his first reaction is to shout 'I've never seen that woman before in my life' and then run out of the room - so it's clear he has some strong feelings on fatherhood, and they aren't positive.

One of Barney's catchphrases throughout the show is, of course, 'who's your Daddy?

Over its nine seasons, hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother seen the central five characters develop massively. Coming in as fresh faces in their twenties, still figuring out a lot of aspects in life, the group settles in their lives throughout the story of Ted meeting his children's mother. The character who perhaps changed the most, was the show's most iconic character, Barney Stinson. While the finale did undo a lot of the brilliant work done in early seasons, Barney still underwent many changes throughout the show, developing his character. Here are ten of the most significant ways Barney Stinson changed between How I Met Your Mother's first season and the finale.

Barney's disdain for Canada is well documented throughout the show with his tormenting of Robin, and insults towards the country, claiming at points to have never even heard of it. In the season seven episode "The Slutty Pumpkin Returns," though, it comes out that Barney himself is one-quarter Canadian. Barney reacts awfully to this news, and from there, Barney goes from tormenting to tormented about the country and nationality. Barney is known as a cool, corporate, suit-wearing, womanizer , with a severe lack of care, and a lack of empathy for others.

Fans find out early though that Barney had not always been like that. It is revealed that Barney was once in a relationship with a girl Shannon, and worked in a coffee shop, intending to join the Peace Corps with her until a man in a suit called Greg Fisher took her.

This past life is brought up again in later episodes as, despite his womanizing ways, Barney lost his virginity at twenty-three after sleeping with an elderly friend of his mother. Barney's job is a mystery throughout the show, answering "please" anytime someone asks. In season nine, however, Barney finally reveals it to Ted and Robin when he gets to the point of drunkenness that he can only tell the truth.

But, after his wedding, Barney reveals to the man who hired him and who stole Shannon from him, that he has been working with the feds, and gets Greg arrested. Barney's tough upbringing and strained family life become well documented throughout the show. His mother lied to him constantly, even making him half believe Bob Barker is his birth father. In season six, though, Barney's father is revealed to be his uncle Jerome.

Later, Barney meets his biological father, his wife, and another son. Barney is bitterly disappointed by his father and needs to be convinced by the gang to meet him again. Eventually, their relationship did have some growth, with Jerome even attending Barney's wedding. Known as a loner, a womanizer, a guy who is anti-marriage, anti-commitment, and anti-relationship, Barney always loved his single lifestyle.

Eventually, through the show, though, Barney did come to give relationships a shot. He goes into a toxic relationship with Robin before breaking up. He later meets Nora, who gives Barney a second chance, and the two seemed to work well until Barney cheated on her with Robin and dumped her at the promise Robin would dump Kevin, and they would be together. Then there was Quinn, who Barney seemed to fall for, even getting engaged, before it became apparent they could not work.

Barney is a deeply flawed person in a lot of ways, but one that fans cannot help but adore. He has a plethora of personal issues and problems evident throughout the show.

As the show goes on, Barney does show growth and works on a lot of these. RELATED: How I Met Your Mother: 10 Most Hilarious Barney Stinson Quotes. He opens up more about his emotions about things while still being reserved. His abandonment issues are something that Barney grows with and works on. He helps his friends when they do not even know it , despite giving an image of being too cool to care, he does, and that care grows continuously.

As well as all that, Barney seems to slowly grow out of a lot of the issues with his mother, even if some remain, He stops lying to her about a fake family and learns not to believe some lies she told him growing up.

Overall, he grew as a person, and in his maturity. Barney is a frequent hater on love. He is a single guy who sleeps with an insanely unhealthy amount of women, and that is the life he wants to lead for a good portion of the show. That is until Robin. The two were together for a while but broke up. But, even throughout his other relationships, Barney never got over Robin. He fell, and remained in love with her, going from the most anti-love person on the show, to at a couple of points the one who craved it most.

Perhaps even more than love, Barney appeared to despise the idea of marriage. But, when he knows that he needs Robin and is madly in love with her, he sets up an elaborate play to get her back and marry her. RELATED: How I Met Your Mother: Barney's 10 Best Quotes About Love. The long drawn out plan known as "The Robin" worked. The two got engaged and the entire ninth season built around their wedding.

The wedding came, but in the finale, it is revealed that they divorced three years later, much to the anger of fans. Following the divorce, Barney goes back to his womanizing ways. He aimed further than he ever had with his goals as a player going for the perfect month, thirty-one women in thirty-one days.

On the last day, Barney got the woman pregnant. Barney was so against having children and was dreading the day. But, when the day came, and Barney saw his baby girl, Ellie, for the first time, he fell in love. He told her how much he adored her and cried as he held her in one of the shows most emotional moments.

When Barney's daughter is born, it changes Barney. While he was not in a relationship with the mother, known affectionately as Number Thirty-One, Barney reveals in the future, that he is happy raising his daughter.

Ellie made Barney realize he has to settle down, he has to give up the sleeping around, and he gains a whole new perspective on life. He even scolds two young girls who not long before he would have simultaneously hit on. Fans may hate the finale, and what it undid to Barney's character, but the final piece of growth is undeniable despite its bumpy road.
